amplitude of 1 V peak measured across a 1 Ohm resistor will cause 0.707 Watts to be dissipated in the
resistor, as the rms voltage of a 1 V peak sine-wave is 0.707 V. For more complex signals, such as a
rodent vocalization, the rms value must be computed by averaging the square of the vocalization over a
selected duration, and then taking the square-root of the result, if indeed the energy put into the
vocalization is of interest.
